STARFISH READING

with Miss Gardner

Starfish have the unique ability to “re-grow” damaged or missing arms. The goal of STARFISH READING is to “re-grow” any of the 5 areas of reading that may be incomplete.

                                          5 Big Areas of Reading

                 1. Phonemic Awareness.                                                          2.   Phonics

          3.   Fluency

                 4.   Comprehension

          5.   Vocabulary

STARFISH READING is based on the RTI (Response to Intervention) initiative that our state has recently begun. The goal of RTI is to identify students’ probabilities of becoming competent readers, and to intervene EARLY with those students who show difficulties in any of the 5 big areas of reading. This intervention is based on students’ progress with the DIBELS measure, and changes frequently, based on the progress and needs of the students. They work in small groups of 1-4 for 20-30 minutes daily to strengthen the major areas of reading.

The Dynamic Indicators of Basic Early Literacy Skills (DIBELS) is a set of standardized, individually administered measures of early literacy development. Each one is designed to be short (one minute) fluency measures used to regularly monitor the development of pre-reading and early reading skills.

Students in Kindergarten through second grades take the DIBELS  test 3 times yearly: Fall, Winter, and Spring. Based on the results of this testing, students are selected to participate in STARFISH READING.
